So many times it seems that young people in
poorer places lack opportunities of any kind.
In an effort to truly serve them we try to
bring new opportunities whenever we can.
With this in  mind we began offering
typing classes in some locations.  Our first
community for classes was in La Fama of
Monterrey Mexico.  As children would
practice and grow in trust they would be
granted more time using a typing program
we had on the computer. By the time we left
some children had mastered up to 30 words
per minute.  Most of them had a firm grasp
of the basic hand and finger positions.
The typing classes give us a good
opportunity to speak with parents and
children about using the internet wisely.  In
Monterrey in the evening we would often
meet with the typing students for a story,
prayer, and song time.
English is taught as a regular
subject but many children have
troubles with pronunciation.  When
possible we try to tutor young people
as much as we can in subjects of
English, math, and basic computer
software.  At the same time we learn
new Spanish words, so everyone
enjoys the challenge.
